Am 5. Januar 2014 kündigte Papst Franziskus seine Pilgerreise ins Heilige Land an: "Der Hauptgrund dieser Pilgerreise des Betens ist es, dem historischen Treffen zwischen Papst Paul VI. und dem Patriarchen Athenagoras zu gedenken, welches am 5. Januar, vor genau 50 Jahren, stattfand."

Er wird neben kirchlichen Würdenträgern in Israel den israelischen Staatspräsidenten Shimon Peres und Premierminister Netanyahu treffen. Weiter trifft er den Grossmufti von Jerusalem sowie die beiden Oberrabbiner Israels. In den zwei Tagen besucht er den Tempelberg, die Klagemauer, das Grab von Theodor Herzl, wo er einen Kranz niederlegen wird, sowie Yad Vashem.
