The Consulate General of Israel in Toronto is excited to welcome Dr. Uri Ilan, Attending Physician in the Department of Pediatric Hematooncology at Hadassah Medical Center, Ein Karem, to Toronto for the 2017 World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine Conference [WADEM], which takes  place from April 25th to 28th. Dr. Ilan will join with doctors from over 50 countries to share his unique perspective on emergency medical care and disaster relief. In particular, he will discuss his personal experiences serving as a reservist in the Israeli military field hospital established in Kathmandu, Nepal following the devastating 2015 earthquake. The Israel Defence Force’s [IDF] Nepal operation had the capacity to treat some 200 patients per day and was one of the largest of any international aid mission.

The IDF has been recognized as a global leader in field medicine and international medical relief, receiving in January 2016 the World Health Organization’s first ever LEVEL 3 rating, the highest score the United Nations public health arm can give.

Said Dr. Ilan, “I am excited to visit Toronto and share my experiences with a diverse audience where I can speak to the spirit of the Israeli staff that worked in our hospital.”

Said Deputy Consul General Irit Stopper, “We’re so proud of the important humanitarian work Israel is engaged in and wanted to enable Dr. Ilan to share the personal and professional lessons he learned in Nepal with a Canadian and international audience. Israeli medical innovations – combined with individual commitment and compassion – save and improve lives around the world.”

As well as presenting to the WADEM Conference, Dr. Ilan will address audiences at Public health Ontario, Ryerson University, SickKids Hospital, the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, and will end the week speaking to high school students at the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto.
