It was a windy and stormy night in Wellington, however that didn’t deter the nearly 230 in attendance from enjoying a brilliant night of music and more at the renowned Te Papa Museum. The Embassy of Israel in Wellington put on quite a show for Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, featuring violin virtuoso and luminary Shlomo Mintz, celebrated Israeli cellist Inbal Megiddo and national anthems performed by Pasquale Orchard.

Embassy staff, led by His Excellency Ambassador Dr Itzhak Gerberg and his wife Shifra, greeted guests as they arrived. Family, friends and distinguished guests from around New Zealand enjoyed a selection of drinks and perused an exhibition of Israeli technology, medical and scientific innovations and more.

Following a brief introduction given by the Embassy’s Trade, Development and Economic Affairs Manager, Mr. Amos Palfreyman, Ambassador Gerberg raised a glass with Chief of Protocol of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr. Michael Swain. Once the formalities were finished, Inbal Megiddo took to the stage with the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra and played a fantastic Bloch Nigun. This was followed by Shlomo Mintz conducting the Orchestra through Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings, Op. 48.

After a brief exit, Shlomo Mintz returned to the stage and wowed the crowd with a wonderful solo display. Playing Ysaye Sonata No. 6, his commanding technique and musicianship captivated both audience and orchestra. “His mastership of the violin was truly incredible to see. In such an intimate setting as well - really there wasn’t an eye that wasn’t fixed on Shlomo Mintz during his entire performance,” remarked Kasa B. Harbor, Israeli Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission.

A reception was held to close out the evening. While guests browsed the exhibition, lively conversation was had by all - complemented by local and Kosher catering. The entire evening was a thoroughly successful affair and a delightful way to celebrate Israel’s 70th Independence Day.
