The State of Israel has responded affirmatively to the request of its friends Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama, who turned to Israel for humanitarian assistance to aid in coping with the severe damages caused by Hurricane Eta, which recently hit Central America. The storm and its aftermath inflicted severe damage on the countries of the region, leaving extensive damages to road infrastructure and agriculture, hundreds of deaths due to flooding, and thousands of refugees. This is a disaster of a magnitude the region has not seen since Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Ambassador of Israel to Guatemala and Honduras, Mattanya Cohen: “Israel does not forget its allies, and certainly not when in the throes of a crisis”. Ambassador Cohen visited the city of Puerto Barrios in eastern Guatemala, an area severely damaged by the storm, and distributed humanitarian aid and equipment donated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to local residents.

In Honduras, where over a thousand families lost their homes, hundreds of clothing packages were distributed to families impacted by the hurricane in the San Pedro Sula region by Israel’s Trade and Cooperation Office in Tegucigalpa.

Israel’s Ambassador to Panama, Dr. Reda Mansour, participated in a moving ceremony attended by the First Lady of Panama, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo, where he donated a comprehensive aid package to the citizens of the country impacted by the storm.

Ambassador Reda Mansour: “This donation symbolizes the closeness between the two countries; it is very important to us to support our Panamanian sisters and brothers during this time, when many families have been harmed”.
