    ​Israel has long had major expertise in the agricultural world and has shared her knowledge with developing countries.

    The Israeli Embassy is currently very involved in agricultural projects around South Africa.
     
    Sharing Israeli experience (that has been accumulated from the last 60 years) with South African farmers.
     
    Existing projects are in various provinces. Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Northwest and Kwazula Natal.
     
    Our work is to identify the right place (farms) with the right people (farmers). Through local donors, we buy modern agricultural tools and implement modern methods, mainly in vegetable production.
     
    The training offered is on-the-spot training. We start from the first step of growth until the very end, marketing the produce.
     
    Until now, we have had tremendous success with individual farmers from different farming villages where, in the past, for example, the farmers were only planting before the rainy season and now with sponsored drip irrigation systems, they are able to produce all year round bringing ten times the profit they used to bring.

  • There are two models that Tipa uses

  •  
     
    1)      Two hectares of land per farmer.
    This model is applicable for active individual farmers who are already farming using traditional methods, and can be diverted to modern farming methods.
     
    2)      Five hectares of land for a group (up to thirty people).
    In this system the group will work together and share the expenses and the income.
     
    ​

  • The following would be needed in order to establish the farm for individuals.

  •  
     
    1)      Two hectares of land with a sufficient source of water.
    2)      Committed farmers that are already performing relatively good practices
    3)      Farmers that need no assistance to purchase basic agricultural inputs.
    ​

  • The following would be needed in order to establish a farm for cooperative use.

  •  
    1) Five hectares of land with a sufficient source of water
     
    2) Committed people who are willing to work together as a group and participate in all the activities in the field on a daily basis. 
     
     
    In the technical area, both models are based more on machinery activities rather than man power. The following tools must be allocated for the project.
     
    1)      Tractor – 50 – 60 KW
    2)      Three blades / disc plough
    3)      Disc – Harrow – ( 8 – 10 discs)
    4)      Boom sprayer
    5)      Tractor mounted weed slasher
    6)      Rotavator 1.6m
    7)      Potato ridger

  • Agricultural inputs

    It is important to emphasize that some particulars must be secured BEFORE planting in the field.
     
    1) Fertilizer – Urea LB to be implemented through the irrigation system once the field is planted.
    2) Insecticide / pesticide / herbicide
    3) Seedlings and seeds
     
    In order to establish these models, the following funds would be required.
     
    2 hectares model - about R300,000 per farm. (Drip irrigation, basic agricultural inputs – seedlings, insecticide, herbicide and fertilizer). Machinery NOT included.
     
    5 hectares model – Between R – 1,000,000 and R1.5 Million (Drip irrigation, machinery, fertilizer, chemicals).

  • Please note the following:

  •  
    1)  For the individual farmer’s model - the above mentioned list of machinery will serve several farmers in the same vicinity.
     
    2)  Once some of the machines have already been acquired, the cost will be reduced accordingly.
     
    3)  We are using the best Israeli Drip Irrigation systems manufactured in Cape Town, (either Netafim or Agriplast). We will not guarantee / or be involved with other cheap products.
