ISRAEL AT NALEO, JUNE 26-28, 2014

SAN DIEGO - June 26, 2014 - As part of its intensive efforts to deepen and enhance ties with the Latino community of the United States, the State of Israel has long engaged with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, as an important channel for communication with the elected Latino leadership across the country. In this context, the Consulate General of Israel in Los Angeles is thrilled to be a participant in the 31st Annual NALEO Conference in San Diego on June 26-28, 2014. We are especially proud to be active members of the Host Committee of the Conference.

On Thursday, June 26 at 10:00 am, Consul General of Israel, Mr. David Siegel, will participate in a panel on "Water in the Western United States", at which he will present lessons learned by Israel with regard to its long-standing water challenges, as these pertain to the water crisis in California and the broader region. Israel, over 50% desert and having withstood chronic and prolonged drought, has essentially resolved many of its most pressing challenges in this domain through a combination of desalination, conservation and state of the art water grid management. These are invaluable lessons which can be applied here in the United States.

"I am very excited to share Israel's perspective on water conservation with the policymakers at NALEO," said Siegel. "It is my firm belief that the experience and technologies which have made Israel a world leader in water management, conservation, and recycling will be of great benefit to our partners in the United States."

The Consulate is holding an exhibit at the conference showcasing Israel's broad array of scientific, technological and social achievements. We are especially proud to display our work with local partners in the sphere of education. We have recently completed the first annual Social Entrepreneurship Workshop for Latino and Jewish Students in San Diego, in partnership with the UCSD Rady School of Management, the San Diego County Office of Education and the Anti-Defamation League and look forward to continuing and expanding this project next year. We have also just launched a mentoring project in the San Fernando Valley in partnership with the Cardenas Family Foundation and Project Grad, inspired by Israel's university-based mentoring project "Perach", in which university students will mentor high school students in need of a role model to emulate in order to pursue higher education. These projects are seedlings which we are eager to expand throughout the region in collaboration with the Latino community.

Demonstrating our commitment to engagement with the Latino community and with NALEO, the Consulate recently became a life-time member of the organization. We are very excited to be a part of the 2014 NALEO conference and look forward to deepening and expanding our cooperation.

    Israel Engaged!
One of the Consulate's main missions is to develop relationships with the communities in our region. We are eager to engage with different partners on ways to foster closer ties between local communities and Israel. We all have so much to gain by working together in tackling our common challenges, be they in the fields of education, health, water, technology or social advance.

We are here to work with you. We are here to engage!
