President Reuven Rivlin held a working meeting today (Tuesday, 16 March 2021), with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi participated in the meeting, during which he briefed the minister on Iran’s nuclear program, the gaps in the original Iran nuclear deal and the dangers of returning to it.

The president expressed Israel’s appreciation for FM Maas’s support in the international arena, stressing the importance he sees in strengthening relations between the two countries. “Your true friendship for us is expressed not only in words, but also in deeds,” said the president to the minister.

The president added that the minister’s commitment to stopping discrimination against Israel in the international arena is appreciated in Israel, as is Germany’s markedly improved voting record since he took office. The president also requested that Germany, as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, object to anti-Israel decisions.

This evening, the president will be the guest of President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender for an official dinner at Schloss Bellevue, the presidential palace in Berlin.
