Yom HaZikaron - Memorial Day

  •   My brother: A song dedicated to siblings of fallen soldiers
  •
Israelis from different backgrounds, different age groups, different parts of the country came together close to the border with Gaza. They all have one thing in common: They lost a beloved sibling during Operation Protective Edge in 2014. The music project “My brother” brought them together. Shai, the teenage sister of 19-year-old Sergeant Erez Sagi, says "To know that everyone here is in your situation, that they feel as you do, is good - because no one else can understand.”

During Operation Protective Edge in 2014 song writer Doron Medalie wrote a very moving song entirely dedicated to brotherly love in order to draw attention to the bereaved siblings of fallen soldiers and their pain. When the Israel daily "Yediot Ahronot" and singer Moshe Peretz heard the song, they were in for a joint undertaking immediately. They produced a music video bringing together the siblings of the soldiers who died during this war.

Dozens of brothers and sisters that had lost their loved ones in Operation Protective Edge met in the vicinity of Gaza. At the end of this encounter, Moshe Peretz sang the song “My brother” for the first time in their honour. Ron, 15, feels that the song gives a voice to the widely ignored suffering of the brothers and sisters. “A lot of stuff deals with the parents, but now they are showing the side of the siblings. Not everyone sees how the younger siblings feel, however now people will know and they’ll be more aware of it.”

The video documents the emotional meeting and features the youngsters next to the pictures of their fallen brothers. “In the middle of the song a picture of him popped into my head,” said 13-year-old Rotem, Ron’s smaller sibling, about their brother Second Lt. Bar Rahav, a 21-year-old IDF combat engineer.

Shai, the teenage sister of 19-year-old Sergeant Erez Sagi, said she felt comforted to be around others who could identify with her pain. Erez was killed when terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel using a tunnel that lead from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. “To know that everyone here is in your situation, that they feel as you do, is good—because no one else can understand.” She also feels that the video is a way to make her brother’s memory remain alive.

On this year’s Memorial Day we remember 23,447 fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. May their memories be a blessing.

    “My brother”

    My brother, dear friend
Keep my secrets in the dark
    My Heart, Your Heart
    They beat together
    What we've been through
Only the two of us can tell
    You're my brother, you're a friend

Your blood is in my veins
You go with me through great lengths and do not leave
    I dream that you live
And your songs stay with me in my heart
I love you, love you so much
I love you, love so much

    My brother, dear friend
    Today I thought of you
Where are you, are you ok
    Bring your brother a hug
    Come to me tonight
    We’ll sit, laugh, talk
    You're my brother, you're a friend

Your blood is in my veins
You go with me through great lengths and do not leave
    I dream that you live
And your songs stay with me in my heart
I love you, love you so much
I love you, love so much

Our blood is in my veins
We go together through great lengths, it does not change
    The dreams, the youth
And your songs stay with me in my heart
I love you, love you so much
I love you, love so much
