Israel opposes the proposed law and asks that the government of Poland amend the law before proceeding with further legislation.
No law can change the historical truth and there is no place in trying to educate the families of Holocaust survivors who live every day with the memories of their loved ones who perished in the Holocaust.
PM Netanyahu Statement on Draft Polish law
(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this evening (Saturday, 27 January 2018), issued the following statement on the draft law in Poland:
"The law is baseless; I strongly oppose it. One cannot change history and the Holocaust cannot be denied. I have instructed the Israeli Ambassador to Poland to meet with the Polish Prime Minister this evening and express to him my strong position against the law."
Polish Dep-Ambassador summoned to Foreign Ministry
(Communicated by MFA Spokesperson's Bureau)
The Deputy Ambassador of Poland was summoned this morning to the Foreign Ministry for a clarification discussion with the Deputy Director General of the European Division and the Head of the Diaspora Division.
Israel’s opposition to the wording of the bill was expressed to him. The timing of the bill- the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day- was particularly surprising and unfortunate.
The legislation will not help further the exposure of historical truth and may harm freedom of research, as well as prevent discussion of the historical message and legacy of World War II.
We expect the Polish government to change the wording of the bill before its final adoption and to conduct a dialogue with Israel on the subject.
