Minister of Foreign Affairs Yair Lapid today (Tuesday, May 31, 2022) addressed the 2022 Africa - Israel Conference, an event of Israel’s Embassy in Paris in cooperation with the American Jewish Committee. Following are his pre-recorded remarks:
“For too long, outside political pressure kept us at arm's length. But today, Israel is back in Africa. That is not a slogan. It is a diplomatic, economic, and social reality.
“In recent years, in the same spirit of the progress made in the Middle East since the signing of the Abraham Accords, we have advanced the normalization of relations with three Muslim-majority African countries. Opened new diplomatic missions. Strengthened our ties with countries across the continent. And as part of our commitment to all the people of Africa - we regained our Observer Status at the African Union.
“Today, Israel understands the power of Africa. And Africa understands that Israel is a force for good: We are working together in the spirit of partnership and cooperation, and harnessing our expertise, experience, and technology towards addressing shared challenges.
“In the face of global challenges, countries who cooperate will thrive, while countries who isolate will fall behind. Together, Israel and Africa choose to thrive. We will cooperate to deliver food security for millions. We will coordinate in the fight against terrorism to ensure peace and stability. We will collaborate in hi-tech to create opportunities for millions of Israelis and Africans alike. We will cultivate deeper diplomatic ties to cement our historic and deeply rooted partnership. And we will do this all - as friends and partners. True friends and partners who believe in one another. Who respect one another. Who believe in our common future. And who want to flourish, together.”
