The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Israel and Poland, Gabi Ashkenazi and Zbigniew Rau, together with the ambassadors of Israel and Poland across the world, have joined the 'Yellow Daffodil' campaign commemorating the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began on 19 April 1943. Within the framework of the campaign, the foreign ministers and ambassadors will be photographed with yellow daffodils pinned to their lapels. The campaign is an initiative of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and began on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (2013).

The yellow daffodil was chosen because the late Marek Edelman (1919 – 2009), the last surviving commander of the uprising, received a yellow daffodil from an anonymous sender on each year's anniversary. As a result of the campaign, hundreds of volunteers in Poland now honor the memory of those who fell in the uprising by wearing yellow daffodils on the anniversary.

In addition to the international campaign, a limited memorial ceremony will be held this year at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes' square. The State of Israel will be represented at the ceremony by Tal Ben-Ari, Chargés d'affaires of the Israeli Embassy in Poland.

The initiative to integrate Israeli diplomats into the campaign came from the Israeli Embassy in Warsaw as well as from the ELNET-Poland organization.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is considered to be a prominent symbol of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. The uprising began on 19 April 1943, on the eve of Passover 5703, and ended on 16 May 1943 with the liquidation of the ghetto. It was the first urban uprising in Nazi-occupied Europe, and the biggest Jewish uprising. It was only years after the uprising that the courage and sacrifice of the Jewish fighters in the ghetto were properly appreciated.

Ruth Cohen-Dar, Director of the Department for Combating Antisemitism and for Holocaust Remembrance: "The daffodil campaign is a tribute to the young men and women who decided to take their fate into their own hands. The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees great importance in preserving the memory of the Holocaust, and is working towards the commemoration of significant dates in its history.”
