     General Information

Pursuant to Israeli law, anyone eligible for military service, male or female, who normally resides overseas, must present him or herself in the Consulate closest to his or her place of residence, when they reach the age of 16 years and 4 months, in order to settle their military status.

If the person of eligible age is in Israel at this time, they must present themselves at the Recruitment Office nearest to them.

When applying outside of Israel, the procedure is done via mail (e-mail or hard copies sent by regular mail). NO appointment is necessary.

In some cases, additional documents may be required and there may be a waiting period until responses are received from the relevant authority in the IDF (Meitav).

What is "child of immigrants" status?

A Child of Immigrants status is given to an Israeli citizen born abroad, or an Israeli citizen who left Israel with his parents for the purpose of immigration before he or she turned 16.

That being said, there are circumstances under which a person eligible for army service will not be entitled to this status or will be required to present further documentation in order to attain it. Such circumstances include the following:

    ·         When one of the parents resides in Israel, the eligible individual must demonstrate that they reside with the parent residing outside of Israel.

    ·         Both of the parents reside in Israel.

    ·         When an individual is not entitled to the status of a child of immigrants but can request a deferral, so as to enable them to complete their high school education abroad.

An individual that is not given the status of a child of immigrants, is not eligible for a deferral and must return to Israel.
