Aspect Ratio is pleased to present the U.S. premiere of Guy Ben-Nerʼs latest video, Soundtrack.

Soundtrack marks Ben-Nerʼs return to exploring the relationship between the artist and his family. The title references the videoʼs re-appropriated soundtrack. Ben-Ner lifts the audio track from Steven Spielbergʼs 2005 feature, War of the Worlds, to create a new and personal story of catastrophe set in the familyʼs kitchen. “In the end, there are two movies which function like Siamese twins. The sound is the organ that both films share.”

Foley artists work to create sounds that match the violence and havoc depicted on screen. With
Soundtrack, Ben-Ner cunningly inverts this process and creates imagery that seamlessly matches the blockbuster sound effects originally produced for War of the Worlds. Ben-Ner names the technique “budding” - distinguishing it from the familiar process of dubbing.

Guy Ben-Ner was born in Ramat Gan, Israel. He studied at Hamidrasha School of Art at Beit Berl College before going on to receive an MFA at New Yorkʼs Columbia University. The 2006 recipient of a DAAD Grant, Ben-Ner has exhibited at the Venice Biennial, Cincinnatiʼs Contemporary Art Center, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv. In 2009, MASS MoCA presented, “Thursday the 12th,” a solo retrospective of Ben-Nerʼs video and installation work. Ben- Nerʼs work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Skulptur Projekte, Münster; the Shanghai Biennale; the Liverpool Biennial; and he was commissioned to produce, Drop the Monkey, for the Performa biennial.
