(Northbrook, IL) – Audience members attending Opening Night of the 4th annual NORTH SHORE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL in Northbrook on Wednesday, June 4th, will have a very special memory to boast about for the ages.

Anne Akiko Meyers and Vadim Gluzman, two of the world’s premiere concert violinists, will join forces with their legendary instruments to perform Bach's “Double Concerto” for two violins, strings and continuo in D minor, BWV 1043. Ms. Meyers will perform on her much celebrated “Ex-Vieuxtemps” violin, made in 1741 by Guarneri del Gesu, the most valuable violin in the world. Gluzman's legendary "Ex-Leopold Auer” Stradivari is the very instrument for which Tchaikovsky dreamed up several of his masterworks, including his beloved Violin Concerto. Leopold Auer's Strad taught his many illustrious students like Heifetz, Zimbalist, and Elman. One of the finest instruments ever created, this Strad represents the pinnacle of violinmaking’s Golden Age and has been played by Vadim Gluzman for 16 years, on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

The North Shore Chamber Music Festival has been called an “inspired summer event not to be missed” for Chicagoans and travelers alike. The annual three-day festival, this year on June 4, 6, and 7, is presented at the Village Presbyterian Church in Northbrook, just 2 minutes walk from the Northbrook Metra station. The Prelude Concerts at 6:00pm are free with the purchase of a ticket to the 7:30pm concerts.

98.7 WMFT RADIO, Chicago’s premiere classical music station, will broadcast the June 4th and 6th concerts live from the stage at the Village Presbyterian Church. The June 7th peformance will be taped for broadcast. Fazioli concert grand piano graciously provided by PianoForte Chicago.

    Opening night – Wednesday, June 4, at 6:00pm –
The Festival opens with “ICODA ON STAGE”, a very special Prelude Concert by young artists from the International Center on Deafness and the Arts. The Festival has worked closely with ICODA since 2010 to make the seemingly impossible a reality by creating collaborative performance opportunities for musical talented children who refuse to let deafness be a handicap.

    On Wednesday, June 4, at 7:30pm –
Explore music from “Bach and Beyond”, as Meyers and Gluzman are joined by the Festival's NEW GENERATION ENSEMBLE – comprised of young students from the Betty Haag Academy and the Music Institute of Chicago Academy – in the Bach Double Concerto, and then Arvo Pärt's mysterious Passacaglia for two violins, vibraphone and strings – a rare treat – with percussionist Dane Crozier. Paul Neubauer, regarded as one of the world's top violist and a member of New York's Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, is featured in the second half of this "Bach and Beyond" program in Bruch's Quintet for Strings in A minor.

    On Friday, June 6, at 6:00pm –
Enjoy a Prelude Concert by chamber music ensembles from the Music Institute of Chicago Academy and a presentation by over 70 talented young students from the Betty Haag Academy.

    On Friday, June 6, at 7:30pm –
The festival focuses its lens on popular music composed by Mozart, Schoenberg, and Korngold in a evening called “Mozart in Hollywood”. Mozart’s masterful and much loved Piano and Violin Sonata in F Major is followed by his "Kegelstatt” Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, K. 498, once believed to have been written by Mozart while he was bowling (playing skittles). Mozart was the first composer to write for this highly unusual combination of instruments.

Arnold Schoenberg’s lighthearted arrangement of Johann Strauss’s popular Waltz "Roses from the South" for String Quartet, Piano, and Harmonium was composed in 1921 for a benefit concert for Schoenberg's own Society for Private Music Performance, a series of intimate “salon” concerts which presented contemporary chamber music.

Erich Korngold's is considered one of the founders of modern film music and was the first composer to ever recieve an Academy Award (for his score to The Adventures of Robin Hood). Called “a musical genius” by Gustav Mahler, his concert music is at once cinematic and deeply complex. Korngold’s unabashedly romantic and cheerfully spirited Piano Quintet in E minor is undeniably a virtuosic masterpiece. The work is one of several that few incorporate coded love messages meant for his fiancée as she sat in the audience during concert performances.

Considered one of the most important conductors in the world, Andrew Litton is the pianist in the Korngold Quintet, and then, back by popular demand, Mr. Litton treats the audience to a “Nachspiel Special”, his rarely heard jazz piano tribute to the great Oscar Peterson. A sophisticated nightcap!

    On Saturday, June 7, at 6:00pm –
Chicago personality Henry Fogel gives a fascinating talk about “WUNDERKIND! – CHILD PRODIGIES IN MUSICAL HISTORY”. Fogel is Dean and distinguished professor at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts, and former President and CEO of both the League of American Orchestras and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

    On Saturday, June 7, at 7:30pm –
The audience and performers alike will revel in a celebration of “Virtuoso Fireworks”, a cavalcade of masterful and dazzling showpieces that includes Webern's Langsamer Satz for string quartet, and Mendelssohn's marvelous Piano Sextet in D major, Op. 110, for piano, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass, which, despite the high opus number, is an unbridled early work published many years after Mendelssohn's death. The evening culminates with the world premiere performance of Aram Khachaturian’s Waltz from “Masquerade", transcribed by the acclaimed New York-based film composer “Ljova” (Lev Zhurbin). Ljova has been hailed by the New York Times as “dizzyingly versatile… an eclectic with an ear for texture… strikingly original and soulful”.
