Malawi Foreign Minister Hon. Eisenhower Mkaka, visited Israel (03-06/11/2020) and reaffirmed the intention of Malawi to open an Embassy in Jerusalem.
During his visit, Foreign Minister Mkaka held meetings with Prime Minister Netanyahu as well as Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, where he conveyed a message from Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera that Malawi intends to open a permanent embassy in Israel and establish it in Jerusalem by the summer of 2021.
Israel and Malawi enjoy a warm historical relationship. Nyasaland, as Malawi was known before its independence, granted refuge to persecuted Jews during the Holocaust. Moreover, Malawi is one of the few countries in Africa that has had continuous warm ties with Israel since 1964, and did not sever these relations in the 70s when many African countries cut their diplomatic ties with Israel.
Israel and Malawi have collaborations in agriculture, health, cyber security, water, education and more and the two nations look forward to strengthening these relations further, in the near future.
