One Table, Two Families

    The Consulate General of Israel to the Southwest United States invites Houston-area community members to participate in the “One Table, Two Families” recipe contest. Held in partnership with award-winning author and food blogger Vianney Rodriguez of the Sweet Life, the One Table, Two Families recipe contest creates a connection between Israel and Houston’s Latino population by blending the unique flavors of both cultures through food.​​​​​​​​​​

    Held through a combination of online and offline activities, the recipe contest will create an opportunity for Houston’s diverse community to delve into Israeli and Latino cultures through food. Houstonians can participate by entering the online contest and voting on the recipes.

  • About the Contest

    The One Table, Two Families recipe contest challenges contestants to create a dish that combines the influence of both Israeli and Latino cultures. See supplemental contest guidelines for rules and additional details.

    Semi-finalists will be chosen through a combination of online voting by the general public and taste testing by local Hispanic and Israeli/Jewish community leaders. Grand Prize and runner up winners will be recognized and awarded at a private, culminating event for Houston Hispanic and Israeli/Jewish leadership. 

    Milestone contest dates are:

    - Contest submissions accepted Oct. 1 – Oct. 31 on Tumblr at http://israelsw.tumblr.com. Voting will take place on Tumblr and on Facebook at Israel in Houston’s page in the One Table, Two Families photo album at https://www.facebook.com/IsraelinHouston/photos.

    -Culminating event with finalist and grand prize winners to be held in December.

  • Recipe Adaptation: Shakshuka/Huevos Rancheros

    Get the day started with an Israeli+Latino breakfast/brunch recipe fusion. The challenge is to create an interpretation of shakshuka that will appeal to Texas audiences. Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish of eggs poached in a tomato sauce similar to Mexico’s hot and garlicky huevos rancheros.

    A few tips from Rodriguez on ingredients to use in the fused recipe – cumin and jalapeno paired with either pita bread or tortillas.

  • How to Participate

    The One Table, Two Families recipe contest challenges contestants to submit a written recipe  accompanied by photos, entering the contest. After the submissions have opened on Oct. 1, visit http://israelsw.tumblr.com or Israel in Houston’s Facebook page’s One Table, Two Families photo album to submit a recipe and  provide the following info:
    • Original recipe, including ingredients and cooking instructions;
    • A photo of the dish;
    • Name, email, address and phone number for the contestant; and
    • Name of the recipe.

    ***Please note:

    • Must be at least 18 years old to enter
    • Must live in the Greater Houston area (full details to be found on Tumblr at http://israelsw.tumblr.com).
    • Recipes will be accepted in English, Spanish or Hebrew
    • One submission per person
    • All entries must be kosher style
    • Entries will be accepted from amateurs only; this excludes professional chefs, cooks, and caterers

    The top four, eligible recipes with the highest community votes on social media (“likes”) will be selected for Rodriguez to cook for influential Hispanic and Israeli/Jewish judges, who will choose the two finalists (a grand prize and a runner up). The Consulate General of Israel will award each winner selected.

    We reserve the right to reject a submission for any reason, including, but not limited to:

    • It’s a duplicate or copied recipe;
    • Required information was not provided; or,
    • Recipe does not meet contest guidelines
