Passports and Travel Documents

    Note that all Israeli citizens are required by law to enter and exit Israel with an Israeli travel document.​

    For your attention, Israeli citizens holding a non-Israeli passport will be allowed to enter and leave the country with their foreign passport on a one-time basis. During this period, it is not necessary to renew the passport.
    Upon your travel, make sure that you hold your Israeli passport with you. Official announcement can be found at the link below:

    This directive is valid until 31/12/2024

    As of 1/6/2017 and according to changes in the regulations in regards to issuing regular passports (non-biometric), the passports will issued as follows:

    • Israelis who are abroad temporarily (tourist, students etc.) – will be issued a passport/provisional-passport for one year.
    • Israelis living outside of Israel – will be issued a passport/provisional-passport for up to 5 years.

    The procedure might take around 5 business days from the day of arrival to the embassy.
    Please ensure you allow sufficient time for processing as we are unable to escalate special requests.


    * Please make sure that you have the nominee’s Israeli ID number when you email for consular assistance.
    * Please note all Israelis living abroad wishing to renew their passport will need to ensure their military exemption is up to date. 


    Israeli Citizens who haven't been to Israel for more than 10 years are required to arrive to the embassy in order to renew their passport / travel document
    ​​​Israeli Citizens who haven't been to Israel in the last 5 years are able to recieve a passport / travel document up to 10 years from the last time they were in Israel

    If you hold an Australian Visa, make sure that you transfer it to your new passport / travel document. You can do so in the link bellow:


    * Israeli citizens that has an extension stamp in their passport / travel document must check if the countries of which they will be traveling to and through if they are applicable.
    To our knowledge, the UAE does not accept travel documents as well as extension stamps in passports.​

    Passport/Travel Document Renewal Procedure

    If you wish to apply for a new passport and we are unable to accurately identify you from the old picture in your passport and between the new update photo provided you will need to provide us with a photocopy of an official identification that was issued between the date of issue of your previous Israeli passport and now.
    Please send the following via registered post:
    1. New Passport Application – NewPassportTravelDocumentAdult.pdf - filled and signed
    2. Two 5X5 passport pictures - Sized like a picture for a USA visa, NOT like an Australian passport with print date of the picture - ​the picture must be taken in the last 6 months at most
    3. RegistrationIsraeliCitizenAbroad.pdf - filled and signed 
    4. Current passport / travel document
    5. Toll charges as instructed in the following link: Fee Chart + Methods of Payment
    6. Large registered return self addressed envelope for over two passports, or small envelope for one passport.
    If your requested passport/ travel document is the first requested as an adult (over 18 years old), you must book an appointment at the embassy.

    If your requested passport / travel document is the requested for a minor (under 18
    years old), contact the embassy in order to receive clear instructions for your
    situation via email: consular@canberra.mfa.gov.il

    If your child is aged 12-16, their passport will be valid until a day before their 17th birthday. If your child is over 16 years and 4 months old, they must file for an military exemp​tion before receiving a passport / travel document.​​

    If your passport / travel document was issued for 5 or 10 years, you can only apply for a new passport / travel document​ - not an extension.

    An Israeli passport issued at the embassy is valid for 5 years at most, if 5 years have passed since the passport was issued, please follow the instructions to obtain a new passport​. If less than 5 years have elapsed since the passport was issued, it can be extended up to the full 5 years.

    In the case of extension​ for a passport for a minor (under 18), note that this process requires the arrival of parents and child to the embassy in Canberra.

    Website Symbol Red.pngRenewing Passport or travel document in the event of loss, theft or destruction 

    Please be advised that, as with any other country, all passports reported to police as lost will be logged with Interpol and reported across all border crossings as lost. As such, if you find and use your lost passport you will encounter problems at all airports and other passport checkpoints across the world. Therefore, you must get a new passport from the Embassy after having reported your passport as lost.


    In the event of the loss, theft, or destruction of a travel document, please call us when you have  the following documents:
    • Two updated passport photos 5*5 - Please indicate your name and Israeli ID number on the back of one photo.
    Please note we do not accept photos of any other size. If we receive photos of the incorrectt size, we will not handle the application and everything will be sent back to the sender.

    In case of theft, make sure to bring with you a police declaration/report.

     Any event of loss / theft / destruction, you must arrive to the embassy

          The Israeli passport is the property of the State.
          The loss/destruction of a valid passport / travel document requires the payment of a higher fee.

    Travel document - Explanations
    A Travel document (Teudat Ma'avar bimkom Darkon Leumi) is a document that issued in place of a passport for those Israeli citizens in exceptional circumstances. They are normally valid for two years, the maximum extension is 5 years.
    These circumstances include:
    a) In the first year after migration or have not settled in Israel.
    b) Israeli citizens who have lost or destroyed more than two passportsThe travel document would be valid for two weeks for returning to Israel.
    c) Israeli citizens who are naturalized, have received a passport but do not show an intention of settling in Israel.
    Mutual agreements between Israel and other countries, regarding the exemption from visas, do not apply to this Travel document. You should check whether you need a visa in advance.
