The President of the Cyprus Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades officiated on Thursday 28th May 2015 the unveiling of the installation “Dialogue, Homage to the Cypriot–Israeli Friendship” by fine artist Nikos Kouroussis. The installation was initiate and implemented through warm and very close cooperation between the Embassy of Israel in Cyprus and the Limassol Municipality, as a tribute to the people of Cyprus who stretched out a helping hand to the Jewish refugees detained in Cyprus on their way to their homeland, in the years 1946-1949.
The monument was created on the occasion of the 65 years since the closure of the British detention camps for Jews in Cyprus, in order to signify the human aspect of the, forgotten in years, relation between the Cypriot people and the people of Israel.
As the artist Nicos Kouroussis stated, the installation “Dialogue, Homage to the Cypriot–Jewish Friendship’ expresses in a very dynamic and powerful way the relation between the two peoples, representing the solidarity and support of the Cypriots for the Jewish refugees”.
“Today, the relations between our two countries have reached their most brilliant stage, not out of need or due to circumstances of economic or political compulsion, as in the past, but based on a free will and choice,” said the President of the Cyprus Republic, Mr Anastasiades. “I look forward to my visit to Israel on June 15, which will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the existing close relations between our two countries”.
Mayor of Limassol Mr Andreas Christou emphasized that “during these difficult and dark times, a strong friendship and close bonds were developed between the peoples of Cyprus and Israel, a relationship which we wholeheartedly embrace to this day”. “We recall in our memory with profound appreciation and respect all our compatriots who had undertaken these great efforts and unprecedented humanitarian operation to help the Jewish refugees, from August 1946 to April 1949, therefore let us consider this ceremony as a memorial in their honour”.
Ambassador of Israel in Cyprus, Mr Michael Harari explained that “the idea is to highlight the human aspect of the relation developed between the Cypriot and Jewish people who, due to the historical and political conditions and the existence of the British detention camps of Jews in Cyprus, came close to each other. Long before the establishment of the two national states, Cypriot and Jewish people developed ties and bonds which still, even if not so illustrious, have always consisted a solid base for our present and future”.
