Today at sundown, Jews around the world will mark the beginning of Sukkot, a week long festival which celebrates the gathering of the harvest and commemorates the protection which G-d provided to the Jewish people after leaving Egypt.
Sukkot means "booths or tabernacle" in Hebrew, referring to the type of dwellings in which Jews lived while in the desert for forty years.
During Sukkot, families eat holiday meals together in the Sukkah and it is a popular custom to sleep in the Sukkah. Sukkots line parking lots, balconies, rooftops, and public spaces throughout Israel. Imagine glamping but with a Jewish twist.
