We are all saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey. On behalf of the Consulate General of Israel in New York, our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.

Senator Lautenberg was a tremendous friend of Israel and the Jewish people. He was also the last World War II veteran to serve in the Senate. His remarkable life and career was a reflection of his strong conviction for American values, and he fought tirelessly to ensure that all were able to have the opportunity of the American Dream.

The first Lautenberg Amendment, which passed in 1990, facilitated the emigration of Soviet Jewry and laid the groundwork for other persecuted religious minorities to be given refugee status. He demonstrated a true commitment to the Jewish people that reflected the shared values of freedom and democracy that eternally bond the United States and Israel

Senator Lautenberg was just honored last week with Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life's prestigious Renaissance Award at their annual gala dinner.

In Israel, Senator Lautenberg’s name will continue to live on at the Hebrew University, at the Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology, a major global center for cancer research.

America and Israel are stronger today because of his many years of courageous public service. May his memory be blessed.
