Although small, Israel is blessed with nearly 200 km of coastline, which attract highly dense coastal populations. These same coastlines also serve as highly productive marine environments, supporting most of the marine flora and fauna. These valuable natural resources are under threat due to coastal development. In an effort to advance sustainable development of these coastal areas, Israeli scientists and entrepreneurs are developing innovative technologies that enhance the biological and ecological value of coastal and marine infrastructures without compromising their original function. By integrating knowledge from marine sciences and ecological engineering, coastal infrastructures such as breakwaters, seawalls, and piers, can supply valuable ecosystem services such as habitats for fish, nursing grounds and shelter for various marine organisms. These Israeli technologies are being implemented world-wide for creating greener (or “bluer”) coastlines.
