As a sea around which some of the most ancient human civilizations were arranged, it has had a major influence on the history of Europe, Asia and Africa. It provided a way of trade, colonization and war, and was the basis of life for numerous communities throughout the ages. Nowadays, Invasive species, pollution, over-fishing and costal development are some of the threats to the Mediterranean Sea's biodiversity and ecology. Israel, As a member of the OECD, is putting a lot of resources in protecting the eastern Mediterranean sea and it is a leader in environmental legislation and research in the region.
