The Mediterranean Sea is a large body of water located between Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia. It covers a total area of 2,500,000 sq km with an average depth of about 1,500 m and a maximum depth of 5,121. It borders 21 different nations such as Spain, France, Monaco, Malta, Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Israel. Because The Mediterranean Sea is almost completely landlocked, it has very limited tides and it is warmer and saltier than the Atlantic Ocean. As a sea around which some of the most ancient human civilizations were arranged, it has had a major influence on the history of Europe, Asia and Africa. It provided a way of trade, colonization and war, and was the basis of life for numerous communities throughout the ages. Nowadays, Invasive species, pollution, over-fishing and costal development are some of the threats to the Mediterranean Sea's biodiversity and ecology. Israel, As a member of the OECD, is putting a lot of resources in protecting the eastern Mediterranean sea and it is a leader in environmental legislation and research in the region.
