Artificial Reefs
Artificial reefs, defined as submerged man-made structures that attract settlement of fish, corals and other benthic organisms, are used throughout the world as a tool for conservation and enhancement of marine habitats. Apart from enhancing marine life, artificial reef are also considered as attractive dive sites. By diverting diving pressure from natural reefs, artificial reefs play an important role in conserving our oceans.
Israel has several artificial reefs, including both unplanned, accidental shipwrecks, and planned artificial reefs which have been deployed deliberately to serve as habitats for fish and invertebrates and as dive attractions. Such can be found both in the Red Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea.
Diving
Although Israel is not renowned as a diving destiny, it does have a very large and divers crowd of divers of all ages. SCUBA Diving a one of the most popular sports in Israel, with a very high ratio of divers to non-divers in the general population. Israel is one of the few counties with diving laws dictated by the Israeli Diving Federation. Divers, after seeing from up-close the wondrous marine environment, are driven to help sustain our precious marine resources. For this reason, Israeli divers annually participate in clean-up operations, and even take part in restoration efforts of Israel’s tropical coral reefs.
