  •   Israel Flags off Drip Irrigation Project in Niger State

    The Nigeria-Israel Joint Agricultural Project, Irrigation is Life, aimed at promoting dry season agriculture has flagged off  in Minna with the planting of the first set of seedlings by the Niger State Governor, Dr, Babangida Aliyu and Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Moshe Ram.​

    Inaugurated in July last year, the humanitarian project which is sited on a 2.5 hectare land in Lapa1-Gwari village, near the state capital, is a modern drip irrigation farming sponsored by the Embassy of Israel for the benefit of the host community to mark its 64th  Independence Anniversary.​

    Already Green Houses where seedlings such as tomatoes, water melon, melon and peppers will grow have been constructed on the large expanse of land which was provided by the state government.​

    Stressing the importance of agriculture to any nation, Ambassador Ram advised Nigeria to once again take its pride of place by letting its youths know that agriculture is a lucrative profession, instead of migrating to the cities in search of white collar jobs. He assured of Israel’s readiness to play a part in the development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.​

    According to the Ambassador, embarking on humanitarian activities have become a cornerstone in Israel’s policy and diplomacy in Nigeria adding that it has become a tradition for the Embassy during its National Day celebrations every year to embark on projects aimed at improving the lives of the people.​

    Governor Aliyu in his address noted that Nigeria had the potential to feed the world if more emphasis was placed on agriculture through the practice of mechanized farming. Commending the Israeli government for setting up the drip irrigation farming in the state, the governor directed the Ministry of Agriculture to acquire additional 100 hectares of land in order to extend the project to other parts of the state.​

    Israeli agricultural experts are already on ground to bring their unique knowledge, experience, technology and expertise in transforming the village into a modern agricultural model that will provide job opportunities for the host community and the entire state. ​

    In 2009, the Embassy played host to Israeli cardiologists, who performed free diagnosis and treatments for Nigerians and open heart surgery in Israel for a Nigerian boy with a hole-in-the heart, while in 2010, three Israeli eye specialists operated free of charge about 100 Nigerians with various eye problems.​
