WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Tuesday, November 29, the Embassy of Israel, in partnership with Jimena and Magen David Sephardic Congregation, held an event in recognition of Jewish refugees from Arab countries. The reception, which was held at the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C., was set to coincide with the annual Memorial Day commemorating Jews who were forced to flee their homes in the Middle East and North Africa.
The reception included remarks from Israel’s Deputy Head of Mission, Reuven Azar, as well as Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY).

Congressman Nadler said that “seeking justice for Jewish refugees from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Persian Gulf region goes hand-in-hand with the general obligation to speak out and take action in the face of injustice.”
He continued: “In telling the story of Jewish refugees, I hope that we all are able to find our voice when we see the sufferings of other refugees, no matter their race, religion, or nationality.”

It is estimated that around 850,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries throughout the twentieth century, solely because of their Jewish identity. The reception included a personal testimony from Mr. Jacques Assur who was forced out of Egypt, as well as a tribute to Sephardic culture.
