PM attends memorial ceremony for Chancellor Kohl

    ​While in Strasbourg, Netanyahu visited the local synagogue and met with the French President Emmanuel Macron.

    Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu participated in the special memorial ceremony for former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Strasbourg, France, on July 1, 2017. The Prime Minister flew specially with his wife Sara to honour the former German leader.

    In his remarks on Friday before leaving for Strasbourg, Netanyahu paid tribute to Kohl referring to him as “a great leader, a great friend of the State of Israel and my personal friend”.
    “He did much for the diplomatic and security interests of the State of Israel; all citizens of Israel owe him their deep gratitude. I will say this in Strasbourg, among European and world leaders”, added Netanyahu.
    The memorial service took place at the European Parliament’s seat in Strasbourg, France, close to the border with Germany. Kohl, died on June 16 at age 87.
    While in Strasbourg, the Prime Minister and his wife paid a visit to the Strasbourg synagogue and took part in prayer services.
    Following the ceremony, Netanyahu also met briefly with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders discussed their upcoming meeting later this month in France.
