A cardboard bicycle designed by an Israeli inventor may change transportation habits in some of the world's busiest cities.

Izhar Gafni, an expert in designing automated mass-production lines and an a cycling enthusiast, has succeeded in building  a model of the bicycle and plans to offer them for purchase within a year for 20$ a piece.

"I was always fascinated by applying unconventional technologies to materials and I did this on several occasions Gafni said in an interview with Reuters. Gafni worked four years to cancel out the corrugated cardboard's weak structural points. "Making a cardboard box is easy and it can be very strong and durable, but to make a bicycle was extremely difficult and I had to find the right way to fold the cardboard in several different directions. It took a year and a half, with lots of testing and failure until I got it right," he said.

The bicycle will include no metal parts, even the brakes, wheels and pedals will be made of recycled substances. Initial production was set to begin in Israel in the coming months and three models will be available for purchase within a year.
