Two months before she was crowned Miss World in 1998, Linor Abargil, an Israeli beauty queen, was raped. Ten years later, filmmaker Cecelia Peck created the documentary “Brave Miss World” which follows Linor’s journey while sharing the reality of rape throughout the world, as she urges worldwide survivors of sexual assault not to stay silent.
Ms. Abargil visited Washington, D.C. this week to promote her film and meet with White House officials and members of Congress to discuss what can be done in the future and how best to use the film to help others in addition to educating young men and women on sexual violence.
Ambassador Michael Oren and Ms. Abargil attended a screening and reception of the film on Tuesday evening with the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues.
The Ambassador spoke about Ms. Abargil’s story and efforts to educate the public: “Through her advocacy, Linor is not only creating awareness within the Israeli public, but also influencing cultural and social change around the world. Her choice to share her story on film in the hope that it will encourage other victims to speak out and seek justice is truly honorable”.
