Israeli scientists invent device to end date rape

  •
Researchers in Israel have successfully tested a device that detects drugs lurking in drinks
Scientists[1] at Tel Aviv University have created the gadget[2] in response to the ever-increasing problem of date rape.
In a blind test conducted earlier this month[3], the device detected GHB and Ketamine in each of the drugged drinks, proving the underlying technology to be 100% effective. Now developers are hoping to miniaturize the technology so women can conveniently and quickly test their drinks should they suspect their drinks have been spiked.
The findings could not come at a better time. The organisation Rapecrisis estimates 23% of women in the United Kingdom will suffer sexual violence and rape at some point in their adult life[4].
Professor Fernando Patolsky said today he is, “ecstatic that the technology has passed the first round of testing with flying colours. Unfortunately, sexual violence has blighted the lives of too many women, but hope is at hand as we have finally developed a weapon to win the battle against date rape”.

[1] Professor Fernando Patolsky and Dr. Michael Ioffe are researchers and faculty members of the School of Chemistry at Tel Aviv University.
[2] The device has recently been patented by Tel Aviv University.
[3] Testing was conducted earlier this year. The device tested a number of drinks which were laced with GHB and Ketamine, as well as a number of drinks which did not contain any drugs. The device identified every single one of the drinks which contained the harmful substance.
