Researchers in Israel are optimistic they have discovered a potential cure for pancreatic cancer
Scientists have recently published findings detailing trials conducted on the Klotho protein. Produced naturally in small quantities by the brain and kidneys, they believe it can be used to prevent, and even reverse, the growth of cancerous cells in the pancreas[1].
Researchers hope that further trials could well yield a cure for the aggressive form of cancer, currently viewed by many as untreatable.
Sheba Medical Centre findings build upon prior research conducted around the world[2]. Trials conducted in 2005 found that Klotho helped prevent the growth of breast cancer cells, whilst another concluded the protein could also help protect against the spread of liver and cervical cancer.
The findings could not come at a better time: 610 men are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year in Israel, whilst the disease accounts for seven deaths out of every 100,000.
Dr. Ido Wolf said today she is, “optimistic that Klotho could be used commercially to treat the disease. Further tests are required to study how long-term use of the protein will affect users, but we are hopeful that with more research and investment, we can develop more effective treatment for pancreatic cancer.”

[1]A laboratory study completed at Sheba in 2008 found that Klotho prevented breast cancer cells from multiplying. Researchers later discovered that mutations of this protein, called BRCA1 and BRCA2, greatly increase the risk of women developing breast cancer.
[2]In the most recent experiments on mice with pancreatic cancer, scientists wanted to determine how Klotho could work against this particularly aggressive, rapidly spreading disease for which there is no effective treatment.
