The Cabinet yesterday unanimously approved the establishment of a memorial site to Jewish soldiers who fought in World War II, near the IDF Armored Corps memorial site at Latrun, at a cost of NIS 32 million, half of which will come from Government funding and half from external sources.
According to the decision, the site will be established within three and a half years. In order to meet schedules and budgetary targets, Minister Yossi Peled will chair a ministerial team – in which Immigrant Absorption Minister Sofa Landver will also participate – that will oversee implementation of the project.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he ascribes great importance to the site and to the other site in Netanya, which will commemorate the Red Army’s victory over the Nazis. “Our people were in danger of annihilation and mobilised. They were ready to sacrifice and indeed sacrificed much. We will commemorate and remember these people. It is due to their sacrifice that we are here,” the Prime Minister said.
