In Memoriam - President Shimon Peres, 1923-2016

The State of Israel and its people remember the extraordinary life of our late ninth President, Shimon Peres: a man who embodied the spirit of Israel, serving twice as Prime Minister as part of his seven decades of tireless public service.

President Peres was committed to Israel and the Jewish people, to Israel's security, and to peace. He helped revive Israel as a Jewish homeland, and today the Jewish state stands tall in the world. We pay tribute to him as a visionary who recognised Israel's strength as an intellectual powerhouse, and whose boundless optimism built bridges between peoples.

Prime Minister Netanyahu earlier spoke of how President Peres 'never stopped striving for peace and believing in peace'. In so doing, he left a lasting legacy for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize, and which continues to be felt by Israel's citizens today.

Though President Peres has departed from us, he will never depart from our hearts and minds. We will forever commemorate him for his contribution the rebirth of Israel and the story of the Jewish people.

The Embassy of Israel in London will open a book of condolence for members of the public to sign. This will be available in the Israeli Consulate, 15a Old Court Place, London, W8 4PL, at the following times:
