Mashav’s activities in Ghana are mainly carried out on government to government bilateral relations and people to people engagements.
The main target areas of cooperation are:
MASHAV ACTIVITIES IN GHANA
1. 1959 – Dr. Kwabena Darko, CEO of Darko Farms became the first MASHAV Ghanaian beneficiary to be trained in Israel.
Since then, he has contributed to creating a vibrant poultry industry in Ghana.
2. 2001 – MASHAV established the first Trauma Unit in the Komfo Anokye Hospital in Kumasi.
3. 2008 – MASHAV teamed up with the Kumasi Metropolitan Authorities and the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI) to establish the first two Mother and Baby Care Units (MBUs) at Kumasi South Hospital (in 2008) and South Suntreso Hospital (2009). This project was envisioned and initiated by Prof. Miki Karplus, and every year a team of Doctors from the Soroka Medical Center/Ben Gurion University of the Negev visit the neonatal units for further evaluation and development.
4. May 2013 – Shalom Club was lunched in Ghana with 200 participants - to create a networking platform for all the MASHAV Alumni who attend courses in Israel. Notable MASHAV Alumni include the former Minister of Tourism, Hon. Ms. Akua Sena Dansua, Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation, District and Regional Health Directors and other senior officials in the Ghanaian public sector and civil society.
5. May 2013 – Conducted two Citrus Training Workshops in Cape Coast, which covered topic areas such as required conditions for citrus growth, citrus varieties, factors militating against citrus production, citrus irrigation, citrus nutrition, and increasing yield, among others.
6. Jan/Feb 2014 – Capacity Building Workshop for Citrus Growers in Koforidua and Kumasi. This was a collaboration with the GIZ, under the umbrella of the African Initiative (trilateral cooperation signed in 2010).
7. March 2016 – Former Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, participated in MASHAV's International Education Conference.
8. Dec 2016 – Workshop on Sustainable Educational Leadership for leading kindergarten teachers in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale. In 2008, MASHAV launched the Eearly Childhood Education programme in Kumasi in cooperation with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and MCI. This programme was replicated in 2012 in Accra and in Tamale in 2013. In February 2013, and 2016, a group of 20 teachers travelled to Israel to attend a tailor-made course on Early Childhood Education.
9. Jan 2017 – Training Program on Environmental Management of Natural Parks and Reserves. One cornerstone Training Course conducted in Israel, held at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies.
10. Aug 2017 - Therapeutic Football Workshop in Ghana, held in Ghana for 54 coaches from all over the country on how to use sports in general and football in particular as a method of therapeutic education for youth with disabilities.
11. Sept 2017 – MASHAV Delegation visit to Ghana. In the context of the ECOWAS Summit, Prime Minister Mr. Benyamin Netanyahu promised to send a delegation of 4 representatives from different fields, amongst which MASHAV's Deputy Head, the Head of CINADCO (the Agricultural Branch of MASHAV), a security and a health expert, in an assessment mission to establish potential areas of cooperation for the next couple of years.
12. Sept 2017 – A MASHAV expert in irrigation and fertigation visited Ghana for over a week, in a mission to get to know the two GIZ teaching farms and to establish a joint program for the years to come with the GIZ as part of the Africa Initiative.
13. Feb 2018 – MASHAV Delegation visited Ghana for Emergency Medicine and Disaster Management. In cooperation with Ghana's Ministry of Health, the Israeli team was taken to meet all the relevant stakeholders in the field of emergency medicine. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the Emergency System in Ghana and to propose an assessment report to the Ghanaian government upon request.
