The Embassy of the State of Israel in collaboration with the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement and the Department of Parks and Gardens on 20th April, 2021 celebrated Mother Earth Day with a tree planting activity and the unveiling of the Jerusalem Garden at the La Wireless Cluster of Schools in La, Accra. The event was organized under the theme ‘Restore our Earth’.

By commemorating Mother Earth Day, stakeholders wished to raise awareness about mother earth and called on all to commit to taking good care of the earth while encouraging tree-planting activities especially among schoolchildren. In total, 26 fruit trees were planted on the premises of the La Wireless Cluster of Schools.

H.E Shani Cooper-Zubida used the occasion to launch the third edition of the Israeli Green Innovation Competition, an initiative that supports sustainable green innovation initiatives by young Ghanaian startups. “Your solution doesn’t have to be Hi-Tech oriented or digitalized – it has to be sustainable and productive for the community,” she said.
The winner of the competition will be award on the next Gardens and flowers show, with a fully paid trip to Israel, including meetings with potential investors and internationally acclaimed Israeli start ups that will help the Ghanaian winner to commercialize.

In his speech, the Director of The Department of Parks and Gardens Rev. Charles Nii Ayitey Okine urged all to reset their relationship with nature by valuing it as an indispensable resource. He intimated that “the problems we are facing now are tough, however the good news is that one must not be an expert or millionaire to save Mother Nature, everyone can help do their bit to save the environment by being more conscious of their environmental issues and willing to take some simple steps to save the planet.”

Mrs. Esther A.N. Cobbah in her speech emphasized that the growth and survival of the world depends on keeping the world green by having a green mentality and helping others do same. She said, “So today, as we plant trees do not only see this as a one-day event, a ceremony to mark Mother Earth day and, after today, forget about the deep meaning that this event signifies. Let this be a day you will always remember and take lessons from. Let this be a day on which, proudly and with sincere determination, you are taking charge of your survival and your future as a human being.”

The Ghana Garden and Flower Show, which is celebrating its 9th year of existence, will be held from 25th-29th August 2021. The Mini Pop-Up Version of the show will also be held from 4th – 6th June 2021. These are the flagship events of the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, and initiative of Stratcomm Africa.
