On Monday, 14 May, Israel celebrated Jerusalem Day. It is a day set aside to commemorate the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of the Old City in the aftermath of the June 1967 Six-Day War.

This year’s celebration coincided with the historic movement of the US Embassy from the Tel Aviv region to Jerusalem followed by that of Guatemala.

As part of activities to commemorate the day in Accra, the Anchor Foundation in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel organized the third in a series of the Jewish-Israeli Encounter Seminar on the theme: “JERUSALEM - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.”

In his address, H.E. Ami Mehl explained the political implication of the issue of Jerusalem and emphasized that, the government of Israel has the right to decide which city will be its capital and that, Israel expects other governments to respect it.

The Ambassador also used the occasion to call on the Government of Ghana to follow the US, Honduras, Guatemala, and Paraguay to move its embassy from the Tel Aviv region to Jerusalem.

Other participating speakers at the Seminar included Rev. Dr. John B. Ghartey, Dr. Samuel Onwona and Rev. Kennedy Okosun – they all pledged to use the seminar as a unified platform to send a petition to the President to follow the example of the US and Guatemala by moving the Ghana embassy in the Tel Aviv region to Jerusalem.

The Seminar was attended by various religious groups and friends of the State of Israel.
