On Wednesday, 30 January 2019, the Embassy of Israel in Accra, marked the International Holocaust Remembrance day with the screening of the documentary Numbered. This was a collaborative effort between the Embassy of Israel, German Embassy and the UN in Ghana.

Taking their turns to address the audience, H. E. Shani Cooper, H. E. Christoph Retzlaff and Ms. Gita Welch, all condemned the various forms of human intolerance, especially anti-Semitism.

Addressing the audience, H. E. Shani Cooper recounted her own family’s experience with the holocaust. She used the occasion to remind the audience of the definition of anti-Semitism and called on all to “embrace the responsibility of working towards eliminating anti-Semitism and racism.”

On her part, Ms. Gita Welch called for a unified effort in the fight for universal values and build a world of equality for all.

German Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Christoph Retzlaff expressed that “remembrance imposes a duty – the Holocaust cannot and will not be forgotten in its monstrous singularity. It reminds us each and every day that our mutual coexistence depends on our shared humanity. Racist ideologies that insult and disadvantage others can never be justified. Standing by while human rights are violated is unacceptable and will only propagate more violence. Only if human dignity is respected and solidarity is upheld, will our world flourish in peace.”

Rabi Noach Majeski said the opening prayer, while Rev. Sam Kuranchie Ankra, General overseer of the Royalhouse Chapel International gave the closing remarks. The event was attended by various government officials, members of the diplomatic community, friends of the embassy and members from the Israeli and Jewish communities in Ghana.
