CONCEPT
In health emergencies – whether caused by disease outbreaks, disasters or conflicts – local infrastructures are often compromised and unable to fully assist the population. In the initial aftermath of these events international aid focuses on the immediate needs of the victims of the emergency.
But what happens after?
For many years, Israel’s Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) have been providing aid during disasters and health emergencies around the world. This experience has been recognized in November 2016 by the WHO, which awarded the IDF field hospital the first Type 3 EMT, its highest EMT standard.
The stories of emergency delegations to Japan and Haiti will be shared as examples for immediate assistance becoming long-term cooperation. By ensuring that patients have a chance for better health care in the future, Emergency Medical Teams can enhance the capacity of local health services for everyone.
The “2017 Vera Weizmann Awards for Medical Cooperation” will be presented.
