March 9, 2016 — Dr. Ada Yonath (Crystallographer and Professor at Weizmann Institute of Science) visited RIKEN Yokohama Campus where she had a fellowship with researchers and delivered a lecture during her visit to the 8th HOPE Meeting (hosted by JSPS).

Dr. Yonath received 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome" together with her co-researchers. She has been frequently visiting Japan since 1980s when she came to utilize the protein crystal architecture analyzer at KEK in Tsukuba, and has developed friendship with fellow Japanese researchers.

In her lecture “Key Issues in Contemporary Medicine, Environmental Aspects and the Microbiome”, she referred this day a “celebration day” because, ribosome was considered a dead subject when she began her research it, but now everyone is studying ribosome.
