Continued commitment of love
The Consulate General of Israel in Guangzhou have decided once again not to hold the traditional Independence Day reception to commemorate the day, but instead once again to use the budget that was allocated by the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem for the reception for activity for the people of Guangdong.
This year, the Consulate General of Israel, joins together with the Li Ka Shing Foundation to donate funds to Shantou University for students to carry on their charity activities. The total amount of the joint donation is 420,000 RMB
The donation ceremony was held today when the Consul General of Israel, Avraham Nir and representative of Li Ka Shing Foundation, Dr. Katherine Lo were handing the donation to the Provost of Shantou University Dr.Gu peihuain Guangzhou at the presence of the Director General of Guangdong Department of Education, Mr. Luo Weiqi and heads of Israel Higher Education Commission.
Under the spirit of the slogan "Continued commitment of love", the students of Shantou University will carry out charity activities as part of their public service courses, including the following 4 projects:
1. Building of a Multimedia Center and a drill ground in Longxi primary school in a remote village.
2. Donation of Medical equipment for the rehabilitation center for children with cerebral palsy in Guiling Hospital Jiedong County. (Attached is a list of the equipment)
3. Supporting the utility installation of Xikeng Leprosy Hospital Village in Jieyang City.
4. Improving the living conditions for the elderly in Jingping District of Shantou.
The Consulate General appreciates very much the willingness of Shantou University and its students to include Israel in their efforts for the benefit of the local communities and the great support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation.
This activity combine two major priorities in the cooperation between Israel and Guangdong province, one is the people to people activity that enhance the long friendship between Jewish and Chinese people, that is based on the open heart and the great support of the Chinese Nation towards Jewish people during troubled time, the second is cooperation with the Academy as both Jewish and Chinese People are attaching great importance to Education in the building of the society and the Nation.
This is the 3rd year that the Consulate General of Israel in Guangzhou is using the National Day Reception budget for the benefit of the community.
In 2010 the Consulate have worked together with the Guangzhou Communist Party Youth league and the Guangzhou Children Palace in educational program for the benefit of Children that are suffering from cerebral palsy. In 2011 the Consulate have act together with the Guangzhou Municipal Government to build a clinic in Meitang Village as part of Guangdong Party Secretary Wang Yang initiative to alleviate poverty.
The Li Ka Shing Foundation has started their support to Shantou University in 1981. The Foundation has pledged HK$5.4 billion to support Shantou University, HK$4 billion of which has already been donated as of 2011. With such support, Shantou University has been able to expand and offer multiple degree programs, including master’s and doctorate programs and a seven-year Clinical Medicine program. And it has been able to house a Medical College that has five affiliated hospitals with 3,294 hospital beds.
