Israel is a world leading force in the field of aquaculture research and implementation of innovative marine and freshwater culturing techniques. Israeli companies and research institutes have developed unique technologies, acquired by years of experimentation on various aquatic species. Both fully closed, zero-discharge intensive aquaculture systems suitable for fresh and sea water fish, and open water fish farms are regularly operated commercially in Israel.
Heading the mariculture research in Israel is the National Center for Mariculture (NCM), located on the Red Sea in the town of Eilat. The NCM develops technologies for rearing marine fish and other marine species of high economic value. Studies carried out at the NCM provide the base for developing mariculture as a novel agricultural branch in Israel, utilizing marine and brackish water. The main research areas include: control of fish reproduction, larval rearing, genetic improvement of fish, development of feeds for fish and fingerlings, development of systems for intensive fish growth and of integrated systems for growth of fish, mollusks and algae.
