Gaza war dilemma: morality by numbers?
If justice lies on the side with the biggest body count, then Nazi Germany should have been declared the "good guy" in WWII. Some reports estimate that 16 times more Germans died in the war than Brits, while 2,000 times more German civilians died than American civilians. Despite these heavily disproportionate numbers, no rational person would say today that the Nazis were not the aggressors in 1939.
Yet somehow when Israel is involved, statistics have replaced morality and emotion has taken the place of facts.
The number of casualties in Gaza is indeed deeply saddening and regrettable. Along with the hundreds of terrorists, there are too many civilian casualties. But the raw statistics of the current hostilities do not reflect which side is responsible for the casualties.
In light of the asymmetry between civilian casualties over the last days, it is easy to sympathize with the people of Gaza. No one wants to see innocent civilians placed in harm's way. That is also Israel's position and on this there is international consensus. Almost.
There is one unexpected voice that stands out from this consensus: Hamas.
The residents of Gaza are suffering because Hamas has chosen dense population centers to serve as central launching points for its terrorist attacks. Embedded amidst schools (as recently revealed and condemned last week by the UN), hospitals and mosques are large arsenals of weapons and facilities for manufacturing them, as well as a network of tunnels leading to Israeli territory for the sole purposes of carrying out large-scale attacks against the Israeli people. Hamas has also ordered the civilians of Gaza not to evacuate dangerous areas, thus holding its own people hostage in places it knows will draw counter-fire. These acts are nothing shy of war crimes.
This is no coincidence. Drawing fire onto Palestinian civilians is one of the goals of Hamas. It uses them as human shields and intentionally drives up the casualty figures in order to gather world sympathy. Hamas knows that it cannot defeat Israel militarily, but it hopes that international pressure on Israel will help it on the long road to its openly declared goal, the destruction of Israel.
This extreme Islamist terrorist organization cares only about its fundamentalist and ideological objectives. It cares nothing about civilians. For Hamas, Israeli civilians are targets and Palestinian civilians are tools. Their deaths serve Hamas better than their lives. In the most twisted reality, every unavoidable civilian casualty in Gaza is viewed by Israel as a tragedy, while to Hamas it is a victory on their deadly score board.
Israel values life – all life – and herein lays perhaps the greatest and most tragic asymmetry of all.
Israel's commitment to protect both its own and Gaza's civilian population, even though it was dragged into a campaign that it does not desire, stands in strong counterpoint to Hamas' actions. Before its operations, Israel notifies the citizens of Gaza to evacuate the targeted area through massive leaflet drops, phone calls, text messages and announcements in the Arab media, often providing detailed instructions for routes to safer areas. Moreover, Israel keeps the border crossings open and continues to provide electricity, water and humanitarian aid to Gaza, with hundreds of trucks bringing food, medical supplies and goods as well as tons of gas and fuel per day.
At the same time, how would the Romanian people feel if more than 2,500 rockets had been launched at Romania, sending millions running for their lives to bomb shelters many times a day? These rocket attacks, which are specifically intended for maximum civilian casualties, could have easily sent the Israeli death toll soaring into the thousands. Fortunately these results were not accomplished thanks to the importance Israel places on protecting its peoples via warning systems, bomb shelters and the Iron Dome defense system. The fact that large-scale slaughter in Israel was not achieved does not detract from the deadly intent of the ongoing and relentless rocket attacks perpetrated by Hamas.
And the people of Israel and Gaza continue to be in danger because Hamas decided to prolong the fighting. On July 15th, one week after the start of the operation, Israel accepted the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire and three other humanitarian ceasefires since then, stopping its military activities. Hamas, however, rejected them outright, offering only rockets in return. Therefore, a long-term quiet between the Gaza Strip and Israel will only be achieved through the disarmament of the terrorist groups in Gaza, first and foremost Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.
Don’t play into Hamas' hands. Only by placing the blame where the blame truly belongs - on Hamas - will this terrorist organization stop deliberately causing Palestinian and Israeli deaths.

Dilema războiului din Gaza: moralitatea în funcţie de numere?
Dacă dreptatea ar sta de partea părţii cu pierderile cele mai mari, atunci statul german nazist ar fi trebuit să fie declarat „băiatul bun“ în cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Unele rapoarte estimează că în acel război au murit de 16 ori mai mulţi germani decât britanici, în timp ce de 2000 de ori mai mulţi civili germani şi-au pierdut viaţa în comparaţie cu americanii. În ciuda acestor numere clar disproporţionate, nici o persoană nu ar putea spune astăzi că naziştii nu ar fost agresorii în 1939.
Şi totuşi, când e vorba despre Israel, statisticile au înlocuit moralitatea şi emoţiile au luat locul faptelor.
Numărul victimelor din Gaza este într-adevăr teribil de trist şi regretabil. Alături de sute de terorişti, sunt prea multe victime din rândul civililor. Dar statisticile de bază asupra ostilităţilor din prezent nu reflectă care parte este responsabilă pentru victime.
Având în vedere asimetria dintre victime civile în ultimele zile, este uşor să empatizezi cu oamenii din Gaza. Nimeni nu vrea să vadă civili nevinovaţi expuşi pericolului. Aceasta este, de asemenea, poziţia Israelului şi în acest sens există un consens internaţional. Aproape.
O voce neaşteptată face notă discordantă la acest consens: Hamas.
Rezidenţii Fâşiei Gaza suferă pentru că Hamas a ales zonele cu populaţie densă pentru a servi drept puncte centrale pentru atacurile teroriste comise de membrii săi. Ascunse în şcoli (aşa cum a dezvăluit şi a condamnat ONU săptămâna trecută), spitale şi moschei, aceste locuri au devenit centre pentru depozitarea unui adevărat arsenal de arme, dar şi pentru producerea lor, ascunzând şi o reţea de tuneluri care duc direct pe teritoriul israelian cu un singur scop: comiterea unor atacuri la scară largă asupra poporului israelian. Hamas le-a ordonat civililor din Gaza să nu evacueze zonele periculoase, astfel ţinându-şi ostatici proprii oameni în locuri de unde știu că vor fi contra-atacuri. Aceste acţiuni nu sunt departe de crimele de război.
Nu e nicio coincidenţă. Bombardarea civililor palestinieni este unul dintre obiectivele Hamasului. Îi foloseşte drept scuturi umane şi creşte numărul de victime printre civili în mod intenţionat, pentru a câştiga empatia lumii. Hamas ştie că nu poate înfrânge Israelul militar, dar speră că presiunea internaţională asupra Israelului îi va servi la obţinerea scopului e termen lung, care este distrugerea Israelului.
Acestei organizaţii teroriste extremiste de factură islamistă nu îi pasă decât de obiectivele ei fundamentaliste şi ideologice. Nu îi pasă deloc de civili. Pentru Hamas, civilii israelieni sunt ţinte şi civilii palestinieni sunt uneltele. Moartea lor serveşte mai mult Hamasului decât viaţa lor. În această realitate absurdă, fiecare moarte inevitabilă a unui civil din Gaza este privită de Israel drept o tragedie, în timp ce pentru Hamas este o victorie pe tabela lor de scoruri ale morţii.
Israelul preţuieşte viaţa – toate vieţile – iar aici se află probabil cea mai mare şi tragic asimetrie posibilă.
Angajamentul Israelului de a proteja atât cetăţenii săi, dar şi populaţia civilă din Gaza, chiar dacă a fost atrasă într-o campanie pe care nu şi-o doreşte, se dovedeşte a fi în profundă contradicţie cu acţiunile Hamasului. Înainte de operaţiunile sale, Israelul îi avertizează pe cetăţenii din Gaza să evacueze zonele vizate printr-un număr mare de broşuri, apeluri telefonice, mesaje sms şi anunţuri lansate în mass media arabă, oferind de multe ori instrucţiuni detaliate ale rutelor către zonele sigure. Mai mult, Israelul menţine punctele de trecere de la frontieră, deschise, şi continuă să ofere electricitate, apă şi ajutor umanitar pentru Gaza, cu sute de camioane cu hrană, echipamente medicale şi bunuri, precum şi tone de carburant pe zi.
În acelaşi timp, cum s-ar simţi cetăţenii români dacă peste 2500 de rachete ar fi lansate înspre România, obligând ca milioane de oameni să fugă în adăposturi pentru a-şi salva viaţa, de mai multe ori pe zi? Aceste atacuri cu rachetă, care vizează în mod special maximum de pierderi de vieţi, ar fi putut să crească dramatic numărul de morţi în rândul israelienilor până la câteva mii. Din fericire, aceste obiective nu pot fi atinse mulţumită importanţei pe care Israelul o acordă protejării poporului său prin sistemele de avertizare, adăposturi şi scutul antirachetă Iron Dome (n.r. Cupola de Fier). Faptul că nu avem un măcel la scară largă în rândul israelienilor nu trebuie să ne distragă atenţia de la intenţiile mortale ale Hamasului prin atacurile lor cu rachetă neîncetate.
Iar oamenii din Israel şi Gaza continuă să se afle în pericol pentru că Hamas a decis să prelungească luptele. La 15 iulie, la o săptămână după demararea operaţiunii, Israelul a acceptat propunerea de încetare a focului susţinută de Egipt şi alte trei armistiţii umanitare de atunci, încetându-şi operaţiunile militare. Cu toate acestea, Hamas le-a respins direct, răspunzând în schimb numai cu tiruri de rachete. Astfel, o linişte pe termen lung între Fâşia Gaza şi Israel nu poate fi obţinută decât prin dezarmarea grupărilor teroriste din Gaza, în primul rând şi înainte de toate Hamas şi Jihadul Islamic.
Nu vă lăsaţi manipulaţi de Hamas. Numai prin plasarea vinovăţiei în cârca celui care poartă cu adevărat vina – în acest caz, Hamas - această organizaţie teroristă va înceta să mai provoace intenţionat decese în rândul palestinienilor şi israelienilor.
