Israeli elected to UN committee on discrimination against women

    Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari was elected on June 26, 2014 for an additional as an expert on the UN Committee on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), winning the support of 128 states. This is the third term of Prof. Halperin-Kaddari, who is a leading expert the field of family law, a professor at the Bar-Ilan University Faculty of Law, and Director of the Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Women at Bar-Ilan.

    The CEDAW commmittee is widely regarded as one of the UN's most prestigious organs in the area of human rights in general and women's rights in particular, including members from 23 states.

    Prof. Halperin-Kaddari's election was the fruit of an effective diplomatic campaign, spearheaded, among others, by the International Organizations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Israeli Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

    Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman congratulated Prof. Halperin-Kaddari on her impressive achievement, saying that this was "another reflection of the important and untiring work carried out by the Israel Foreign Ministry at the United Nations and other international forums to promote and upgrade Israel's status in the world."
