The Ambassador of Israel in Romania, Tamar Samash, has received on Monday the title of ‘Honorary Citizen’ of the municipality of Iasi.
“It is a special day for our city, showing that Iasi is a city of tolerance and remains a city of culture, of traditions, of multiculturalism. Our generation is succeeding in pointing this out. Basically, by this we show the world that the city of Iasi is able to remember the good times and the less beautiful ones in its history and knows how to appreciate the valuable people. The citizens of Iaşi bring an appreciation to the community which wrote a beautiful page of its history,” Mayor Mihai Chirica said, according to Agerpres.
The Israeli ambassador said she is “related to Iasi and through Iasi with Romania”.
“Usually people ask me if I have Romanian origins, but I do not. Now I can say I am Romanian. Now I am related to Iasi and through Iasi with Romania. My husband’s family is from this region and they’ve always talked to me about Iasi and the beautiful places around. I wasn’t part of the story until now. I feel in Iasi a real desire to remember the past, to confront it and to guide out thoughts to the future. We have very many things to accomplish together. For this reason I am very grateful to Mr. Mayor Mihai Chirica for being so active in strengthening the relations between Iasi and Israel,” the Ambassador of Israel to Romania, Tamar Samash, said.
The ceremony of handing over the title of Citizen of Honour has taken place one month after the decision by the Iasi Local Council to grant the distinction.
