Speech of H.E. Mr. Dan Ben-Eliezer
We commemorate today 74 years since the Pogrom of Iasi, which left a painful scar in the history of this city and of Romania. Although time has passed, the brutality of this dark page still resonates in our hearts and minds.
The tragedy of the Holocaust, the Shoah, turned Jews into pariahs, whose basic rights, including their right to live, had to be abolished. The systematic Pogrom of Iasi is one of its cruel episodes, which led to the loss of thousands of innocent men, women and children who suffered dearly.
This is also the case of my mother, Gisela Steuerman, and her family, who lived in Iasi, on Barboi street number 5. One day, their peaceful lives were abruptly changed. Her brother, Milu, whom she loved so much, found his end at only 27. He was on one of the death trains, in horrible conditions, later to be buried in a common grave in Podu Iloaei.
I was born in our Jewish homeland, the State of Israel. My mother wanted to shield me from these terrible stories so she would not talk much about what had happened. As a child, it might have been difficult to grasp the magnitude of the horrific scenes she had had to endure, but her burden could be felt in her silence. It was only after she had passed away that I found the yellow Star of David she had to wear and my uncle’s death certificate, issued two years after his passing, stating as his cause “train with Jews evacuated from Iasi to Podu Iloaei”.
But what my mother used to share with me; many stories about her happy childhood and teenage years, especially during her time at the Notre Dame de Sion institute, in beautiful Iasi. Therefore for me, to stand here today, as Ambassador of Israel, is a great privilege. I feel as though I close a circle in a place where my roots are, in Romania, which shares a special relation with Israel. I value the opportunities I have had, during my 5 year assignment, to build bridges between our two countries and peoples, among them between the city of Iasi and Israel, bridges which will also serve our children, who are the future.
Educating the young generations on the past and teaching them to honor the memory of our dear ones who have perished, is our duty as citizens of this world. By passing them on the lesson of the Holocaust, we hope that they will not be indifferent to the sufferings of others and that they will stand against such a dark chapter of history from repeating.
Last but not least, I would like to commend the Romanian government for taking actions dedicated to combating racism, xenophobia and Anti-Semitism. I would also like to highlight the efforts made in educating on the subject of the Shoah, which I hope will only intensify. Furthermore, as Romania will chair the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) starting next year, I am sure that further significant projects will be made.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Today we commemorate the loss of innocent Jewish men, women and children, victims of the Pogrom in Iasi. Their memory will forever stay in our hearts and minds, as their stories will continue to live.

Astăzi comemorăm 74 de ani de la Pogromul din Iași, care a lăsat o rană dureroază în istoria acestui oraș și a României. Deși timpul s-a scurs, brutalitatea acestei pagini negre rezonează în inimile și mințile noastre.
Tragedia Holocaustului, Shoah, a transformat evreii în paria, ale căror drepturi fundamentale, chiar și cel de a trăi, au fost eradicate. Pogromul sistematic de la Iași este unul din episoadele de cruzime care au condus la pierderea a mii de bărbați, femei și copii inocenți, ce au suferit nespus.
Acesta este și cazul mamei mele, Gizela Steuerman, și al familiei sale, care trăiau în Iași, pe strada Barboi numărul 5. Într-o zi, viețile lor liniștite s-au schimbat abrupt. Fratele ei, Milu, pe care îl iubea atât de mult, și-a găsit sfârșitul la doar douăzeci și șapte de ani. El a fost condamnat la unul din trenurile morții, în condiții oribile, mai târziu fiind înmormântat într-o groapă comună în Podu Iloaiei.
Eu m-am născut în patria noastră evreiască, Statul Israel. Mama a dorit să mă protejeze de aceste povești teribile, așa că nu a vorbit prea mult despre ce se petrecuse. Copil fiind, era greu să înțeleg magnitudinea acelor scene groaznice la care a trebuit să fie martoră, dar povara ei se simțea în tăcerea sa. De abia după moartea sa am găsit Steaua galbenă pe care trebuia să o poarte, și certificatul de deces al unchiului meu, emis după doi ani de la acesta, ce declara drept cauză „tren cu evrei evacuați din Iași spre Podu Iloaiei.”
Însă mama obișnuia să îmi povestească despre anii săi fericiți de copilărie și de adolescență, mulți petrecuți la Institutul Notre Dame de Sion, în frumosul Iași. Așadar, pentru mine, să fiu prezent astăzi aici, ca Ambasador al Israelului, este un mare privilegiu. Mă simt ca și cum închei un ciclu în locul în care se găsesc rădăcinile mele, în România, care împarte o relație atât de specială cu Statul Israel. Apreciez șansele pe care le-am avut, de-a lungul celor cinci ani de mandat, de a construi legături între cele două țări și popoare ale noastre, printre care și cele directe dintre municipiul Iași și Israel, legături care vor deservi și copiilor noștri, viitorul.
Educația tinerelor generații asupra trecutului și învățarea lor să onoreze memoria celor dragi care au pierit este datoria noastră de cetățeni ai acestei lumi. Predând lecția Holocaustului către ei, sperăm că nu vor rămâne indiferenți la suferințele altora și că se vor împotrivi repetării unui astfel de capitol nefericit al istoriei.
Nu în cele din urmă, doresc să felict guvernul român pentru acțiunile sale dedicate combaterii rasismului, xenofobiei și anti-semitismului. Doresc, de asemenea, să subliniez eforturile depuse în educația asupra Shoah, care sper că vor continua să se intensifice. Mai mult, având în vedere că România va prelua șefia Alianței Internaționale pentru Memoria Holocaustului începând cu anul viitor, sunt convins că se vor derula și alte proiecte importante.
Doamnelor și domnilor,
Astăzi comemorăm pierderea de bărbați, femei și copii inocenți, evrei, victime ale Pogromului de la Iași. Amintirea lor va fi păstrată mereu în inimile și mințile noastre, iar poveștile lor vor trăi pentru totdeauna.
