The Speech of H.E. Dan Ben Eliezer,
Ambassador of the State of Israel to Romania,
On the occasion of the 10th edition of Bereshit
March 18th 2015, Bucharest
I am happy to participate today in the 10th edition of Bereshit seminar. This special event brings together again members of Jewish communities from across Romania, creating an environment for the further enrichment of our shared history, values, and traditions, which constitute the core of our identity.
The Bible describes how the children of Israel emerged from bitter enslavement in ancient Egypt to become a nation in the land of Israel. Because we were born in slavery, we can understand the yearning for freedom and -since we have suffered from persecutions-, we cherish the sanctity of life and the value of human dignity.
The rebirth of Israel, in nineteen forty-eight (1948), one of the most significant events in our history, has materialized the dream of a homeland, which had nourished in the hearts of the Jewish people for two thousand years.
Israel’s Declaration of Independence proclaimed the formation of a Jewish state which would adhere to the principles of freedom, equality and tolerance for all its inhabitants. The newly formed state, in contrast to its surrounding region, adopted democratic and pluralistic guidelines for its own society while the absorption of Jews from around the world added to the multicultural nature of Israel.
In spite of its turbulent and dramatic history, the conflicts and tensions over the last decades, and in spite of the difficult issues it has been confronting with internally and internationally, Israel has proudly succeeded in realizing many achievements, by developing innovative solutions in many domains for local, regional and global challenges. These solutions are also transferred to other countries, thus contributing to their social and economic growth.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The Jews of the Diaspora and the Jews of Israel have always shared a bond of love and a common destiny: we are Am Echad.
We cannot undo the past; however we can make sure that its tragedies serve as a clear lesson for the future.
By further strengthening our relationship, we empower ourselves to stand united.
Pesach will soon be upon us, reminding us of the togetherness and the persistence of the Jewish people. This holiday evokes the miracles that took place and our path as Jews to freedom. We stand today proud for our history and its legacy and for our Jewish nation and homeland - the vibrant and strong State of Israel.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, Dr. Aurel Vainer and the Director of Joint Distribution Committee, Mr. Israel Sabag for organizing this year’s Bereshit.

cu ocazia celei de-a zecea ediție a Bereshit

Sunt bucuros să particip astăzi la cea de-a zecea ediție a Bereshit. Acest eveniment special reunește membri din comunități evreiești de-a lungul României, creând un mediu pentru mai buna îmbogățire a istoriei, valorilor și a tradițiilor pe care le împărtășim, și care constituie nucleul identității noastre.
Biblia descrie cum fiii lui Israel s-au eliberat de tragica robie din Egiptul Antic, devenind o națiune în țara lui Israel. Deoarece ne-am născut în sclavie, putem înțelege dorința pentru libertate și – deoarece am suferit din pricina persecuțiilor – putem aprecia sanctitatea vieții și valoarea demnității umane.
Renașterea Israelului, în o mie nouăsute patruzeci și opt (1948), unul din cele mai importante evenimente din istoria noastră, a materializat visul care nutrise timp de două mii de ani în inima poporului evreu.
Declarația de Independență a Israelului a proclamat formarea unui stat evreiesc care aderă la principiile libertății, egalității și toleranței pentru toți cetățenii săi. Statul nou format, în contrast cu regiunea din vecinătate, a adoptat principii democratice și pluralistice pentru propria societate, în timp ce absorbția de evrei din jurul lumii a contribuit la natura multiculturală a Israelului.
În ciuda istoriei sale turbulente și dramatice, a conflictelor și tensiunilor din ultimele decenii, și în pofida problemelor dificile cu care s-a confruntat atât intern, cât și internațional, Israelul a reușit cu mândrie să îndeplinească multe realizări, în mare parte datorită dezvoltării de soluții în multe domenii, ca răspuns la provocările locale, regionale și globale. Aceste soluții aplicate cu succes sunt transferate către alte țări, astfel contribuind la creșterea socială și economică a acestora.
Doamnelor și domnilor,
Evreii din Diaspora și evreii din Israel au împărtășit dintotdeauna o legătură de iubire și un destin comun: suntem Am Echad.
Nu putem șterge trecutul; cu toate acestea putem să ne asigurăm că tragediile sale sunt o lecție clară pentru viitor.
Prin continuarea consolidării relației noastre, ne angajăm să fim uniți.
Pesach va începe curând, amintindu-ne de solidaritatea și stăruința poporului evreu. Această sărbătoare evocă miracolele ce au avut loc și drumul nostru ca evrei către libertate. Astăzi suntem mândri de istoria noastră, de moștenirea sa, de națiunea evreiască și patria noastră – răsunătorul și puternicul Stat Israel.
Nu în cele din urmă, aș dori să mulțumesc Președintelui Federației Comunităților Evreiști din România, Dr. Aurel Vainer și Directorului Joint Distribution Committee, domnul Israel Sabag, pentru organizarea ediției Bereshit din acest an.
