UN International Holocaust Memorial Day Opening

    The 2013 observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is built around the theme "Rescue during the Holocaust: The Courage to Care", honoring those who risked their own lives to save Jews and others from near certain death under the Nazi regime during the Second World War in Europe.

    Special programs in the event included;
     
    •  the candle lighting ceremony, which eleven candles were lit in remembrance of the 11 million people who perished in the Holocaust,
    • a short film screening of the story of a courageous diplomat, Mr. Chiune Sugihara  (Japan), followed by a speech from a distinguish guest speaker, Mr. Chihiro Sugihara,  the grandson of Mr. Chiune Sugihara and
    • a talk under the topic, “Lessons from the Holocaust for Asia” given by Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

      During his speaking, Mr. Cooper sent an important message to the young generations, the significance of remembering the events of the Holocaust and to keep in mind at least one name of the Holocaust heroes as an inspiration of humanity.
     
    The Holocaust Memorial ceremony was followed by the opening of the exhibition "The Courage to Remember" of the Museum of Tolerance, Los Angeles. The exhibition is on view until February 8th at the United Nations Building, Bangkok.
