Israel will host in Jerusalem during the last week in August the important and prestigious annual conference of the ASC – Asian Science Camp, which is considered to be the most important scientific encounter in the world for promoting young scientists from all over Asia and the Pacific. The encounter, which has been held for six years, is each year hosted in a different Asian country.  The Science Camp, or "The Summit of Genius", is the initiative of a number of Nobel Prize Laureates in the Sciences from eastern Asia who set for themselves the goal of creating a platform to locating and promoting the future generation of scientists from Asia, and to create between them a link that transcends borders and nationalities through the universal language of basic science.

Bringing the ASC – an all-Asian forum to Israel is an important achievement that has been defined as the "flag project" of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the year 2012. The project was planned to be the peak of the events marking "Asia's Year in Israel", a special year in which Israel is commemorating round year anniversaries for the establishment of diplomatic relations with some of the largest and important countries on the continent (The People's Republic of China – 20 years; India – 20 years; The Republic of Korea – 40 years; Japan – 60 years).

The Science Camp, which is being conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the ORT network, will be held in Jerusalem during the last week of August. Most of its activities will be held on the Hebrew University's Edmund J. Safra Campus on Givat Ram and will offer the participants a substantial portion of basic science in the spheres of physics, chemistry, the life sciences, and mathematics from the best scientific minds in those areas in Israel and around the world. Furthermore, the Science Camp is planned to offer the guests a unique and diverse Israeli experience.

In the Science Camp there will be 300 brilliant young male and female participants, aged 17-21, from over 20 delegations that will arrive in Israel from all over Asia and the Pacific accompanied by senior scientists who will serve as the heads of the delegations. In the Science Camp the participants will hear lectures and be instructed by five Nobel Prize Laureates in the Sciences from Israel and abroad, among them Taiwan's Prof. Lee Yuan-Ti, the Nobel Prize Laureate for Chemistry and one of the founders of the ASC, and Japan's Prof. Makoto Kobayashi, the Nobel Prize Laureate for Physics and the Chairman of the ASC's Advisory Committee. Moreover, Israeli Nobel Prize Laureates Prof. Aharon Chechanover from the Technion (medical-chemistry), and Prof. Israel Uman from the Hebrew University (game theory) will participate, as will the Nobel Prize Laureate for Biology, the American Jewish Prof. Roger Korberg. In addition to these, the participants will hear lectures and be instructed by 30 Israeli scientists who are among the most senior leaders in their fields in the world, among them Laureates of the Wolf Prize in the Sciences and other prestigious awards.

Thailand will be represented by 10 young top minds from various institutions namely: Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Triamudom Suksa School, Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University, and accompanied by their 2 senior instructors.

The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rafael Barak, who supported the idea and pushed for its implementation from the very outset said, "It was important for the State of Israel to bring about comprehensive and wide participation of as many countries as possible and, despite the short time that we had available to us, the conference in Israel will be the largest one held thus far in terms of the number of participants." Director General Barak added that the promotion of relations with the nations of Asia – the rising star in the international system – stands at the center of the Foreign Ministry's agenda. "The special opportunity to bring to Israel such an important all-Asian event in the field of science, goes perfectly hand-in-hand with the diverse activities of the Foreign Ministry in the countries of Asia, precisely in these areas of science and technology, in which Israel, although a small country, is labeled as a powerhouse for scientific-technological innovation and progress, and constitutes an object for study, and esteem for its achievements."Israeli diplomacy," says Barak, "is acting to strengthen and deepen the ties with the countries of Asia, as part of long-range planning or a "long journey" for enhancing the People to People interactions and exchanges in all fields and areas, in a way that will benefit both Israel and our Asian counterparts. Science has no borders and in that sense we hope that the 2012 Science Camp in Israel will help us enhance our mutual understanding and bring us closer together".

In addition to the academic content, the lectures by leading scientists and the inspiring encounters in small groups with Nobel Prize Laureates, and the work on a project in multi-national groups, the participants will benefit from a substantial portion of the Israeli experience. The aim of the Science Camp's organizers is to expose the young guests to Israel's diversity – the ancient with its historic and cultural depth, and the youthful with its dynamic and effervescent character.

The opening event will be held with the participation of the President of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres. It will be an event with a special concept of integrating innovative technological elements that will express the Israeli spirit of innovation and creative thinking.
