2 Years to the Iranian Terrorist Attack in Bangkok

2 Years to the Iranian Terrorist Attack in Bangkok

Two years ago on February 14 2012, agents of the Government of Iran attempted to assassinate Israeli diplomats in Bangkok.  They did not succeed, but their attempt resulted in a series of explosions wounding five people.

This bomb plot was part of an ongoing Iranian terror campaign that targets Israeli and Western objectives. This is evidenced, among other things, by the use of identical explosives in the near simultaneous attacks which were carried out by Iranian terrorists in Bangkok, New Delhi and Tbilisi. In the latter two cases, it should be remembered that the perpetrators managed to affix magnetic explosives to Israeli diplomatic vehicles.

Earlier this year, Israel welcomed the Thai court verdict in which two of the Iranian terrorists involved, Saeid Moradi and Mohammad Kharzei, were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years in prison respectively.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's spokesman said that the Thai convictions "are yet another clear demonstration of the Iranian global involvement in terrorism.  We have seen Iranian/Hezbollah terrorist operations in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, in countries across the planet. This involvement can simply not be denied. The Iranians both directly conduct attacks, and -- when it suits their interests -- work through proxies like Hezbollah. I would hope that the convictions in Bangkok will serve as a wakeup call to those in the international community who have illusions about Iranian behavior.”

This terrorist action is yet another chapter in a well-documented global campaign of the Iranian Government to kill Jews, Israelis and especially Israeli diplomats. In all of their attempts, it was clear that the Iranian agents use any means necessary to achieve their goal, even at the risk of life and limb of non-Israeli peaceful civilians.

The Israeli Government is grateful for the security the Thai authorities are providing for the Israeli diplomats and tourists faced with the threat of terrorism.
