- UNGA Resolution 181 took note of the decision of the United Kingdom to end of the British administration of Mandatory Palestine, and signaled the realization of the League of Nations decision of 24 July 1922, giving international recognition to "the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine [the Land of Israel] and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country."
- UNGA Resolution 181 was accepted by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, yet rejected by the Arab population and by the Arab states, who embarked on a relentless war against the plan to establish a Jewish state.
- As a result of the war, the territories of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) were illegally annexed by Jordan, and the Gaza Strip was occupied by Egypt. No independent Palestinian or Arab state was established in those territories.
- The State of Israel was established on 14 May 1948. Israel became a full member of the UN on 11 May 1949.
