Deputy Ambassador of the Israeli Embassy, Mr. Or Daniely visited the Rwanda-Israel Horticulture Center of Excellence and met with trainees of the ongoing training on Plant Protection.
The Center of Excellence Located 12 km West of Kigali, was established by MASHAV (Hebrew acronym for Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation) in 2014, following a request made by the Minister of Agriculture of Rwanda Dr. Agnes Kalibata to set up a special center for advanced horticulture designed for all levels of the farming community, from small holder farmers to commercial farmers.
The design and implementation of the project were carried out by CINADCO – MASHAV’s main professional and operational affiliate for international agricultural rural development cooperation.

The center is based on the Indo-Israel model of “Centers of Excellence in Agriculture,’’ and includes transfer of knowledge; capacity building and demonstration; agro-inputs (nurseries for better seedlings and varieties) and fresh produce.

The center displays a wide range of technologies for horticulture productions, and is made available for applied research and development, training and exhibition.
The center puts special emphasis on building local capacities in agriculture and agricultural entrepreneurship, and will conduct applied agricultural R&D in order to adapt Israeli agricultural experience, technologies and innovations to local needs, serving all stakeholders in the horticultural sector, from small-holders to large commercial farmers. The project is accompanied by a MASHAV long-term expert.

This initiative aims also to promote an efficient extension service in order to ensure an appropriate level of innovation and training for industry stakeholders, to provide specialized assistance and also to support applied research for local solutions.

While Israel operates an agricultural training center together with Italy in Senegal and an avocado production project with the United States in Ethiopia, the Rwandan site is MASHAV’s first official Center of Excellence in Africa.
